RIDER DOWN!!!
It all started at practice. There were only 3 riders and 2 non-riders, 5 people on the course total. My coach, a teammate who is also the motorpacer, and me were the riders. My coach's daughter was training to be a motorpacer. Oh, also there was one spectator. The plan was to warm up, do some sprints, practice some motorpacing, and then do some formed lead out sprints. We eventually got to motorpacing and it was just my coach and I drafting inches from the car's bumper and riding along. My coach then tells me we're going to practice attacks so I am to sprint past the car and see how long I can hold the car off. I held the car off for a lap before my coach does his attack. He disappears into a corner and I go back to the car to shelter myself from the wind. All of a sudden, approaching turn 1, I see my coach lying on the ground, bike down and sunglasses somewhere else. He struck a pedal, lost control, and landed pretty hard on his left side. I drive him to the ER and turns out he has fractured both clavicles (collarbone), the left side being complete and the other being incomplete. Other injuries include a contusion to the hip, bruised ribs, road rash, and a hell of a lot of pain. What a crazy day.
